Angry residents attack firemene after late arrival to fire scene

Some angry residents of Asamankese in the Lower West Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region blocked all major roads in the Municipality and pelted stones at fire officers from Kade over their late arrival to a fire scene.

Three shops including a popular cold store and mattress shop were gutted by fire on Monday leading to losses worth thousands of cedis.

The firemen from Kade had to take cover at the Asamankese Divisional Police Command for close to five hours for fear of their lives.

Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh explained that “because the fire tender in Asamankese, we were told, was not working, the nearby fire tender in Kade was called.”

“The information is that by the time the fire officers got to the ground, the fire had been put off by the indigenes themselves and that got them incensed and they started pelting the fire officers with stones.”

Calm has since returned to the area, according to DSP Tetteh.

“As we speak, the place is calm. We don’t have any figures per casualties. It is too early,” he said.
