The National Organiser organiser of the opposition National Democratic
Congress (NDC) says the party has become an easy target for Akyems to
attack with the least mistake.
Joshua Akamba believes it is something Ayems have been waiting for with
bated breath so they would proceed to make the NDC pay for it.
He told Evans Mensah on Newsnight on Joy FM Monday that he does not
understand why the Akyems are brunt on punishing the party for the sins
of a member in the latest case involving the Ashanti Regional Secretary,
Kwame Zu.
“It is something that they are looking for, it is something they wanted
and then it did happen with one of our members…even in the Eastern
region itself, our former Chairman once made a statement which went in
front of the Okyene palace, it was him alone that was dealt with not the
whole party,” he said.
Mr Akamba quizzed whether their behaviour is borne out of the fact that
“this time they have their son as the president so the NDC must suffer
for it?”
Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council on Monday led a demonstration against the leadership of the NDC.
According to the State Secretary of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional
Council, Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the
NDC, Kwame Zu, made “abusive and provocative statements” against
Okyehene, Amoatia Ofori Panin II.
Kwame Zu is reported on many online platforms to have said last Thursday
that the people of Kyebi competed with animals until former President
John Mahama provided water for its residents, despite the town being the
hometown of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council seems to perceive the comments as an insult to the Okyehene, the Paramount Chief.
But the NDC National Organiser describes the whole issue as the Akyems making a mountain out of a molehill.
”It seems that the whole NDC being tied to it [statement] is quite
unfortunate because this is only an individual who has made a statement.
Even the statement he made was not on an NDC platform but one which had
others including the PNC and a couple of others…unless of course, we
are the target if not so I don’t see where the NDC comes in,” he said.
He said the party will meet and conclude on the Ayem Traditional
Council’s threat of banning the NDC from campaigning in the area.
Mr Akamba said he cannot move to condemn the statement made or Mr Zu
himself since he hasn’t had the benefit of listening to the full tape.
State Secretary of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, Daniel Marfo
Ofori-Atta, said although they have heard the unqualified apology of Mr
Kwame Zu, they do not accept it.
He said reading his statement, “it is clear to see that it [the apology]
is not sincere…Kwame Zu in his statement denied that he insulted the
Okyenhene.”
“We do not have an agenda against the NDC…most often leaders within
the NDC whenever they have the opportunity wants to incite certain
hatred between Ofori Panin’s throne merely because and the Okyenhene has
blood relation with the president.
“We want to make it clear that the Okyenhene played no role whatsoever
in the electoral successes of the NPP or defeat of the NDC,” he added.
