The MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has accused the ruling New
Patriotic Party (NPP) of sponsoring his opponent Michael Kwetey Tetteh
during the recent National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary
primaries.
According to him, some powerful individuals within the government
pointed it out to him in the company of John Jinapor, MP for Yapei
Kusawgu, that they were going to make sure that he loses his seat during
the parliamentary primaries.
“A very key person in the government said to me that ‘look we are taking
you out….you can go up and come, we will take you out’….and I saw the
mighty hand of the state in this elections” he alleged.
Sam George believes his constituency being a stronghold of NDC won’t be
easy for the NPP to win during the general election, therefore, the only
way they could take him out is to sponsor his opponent to win.
“The NPP’s candidate who made the move during the 2016 elections has now
transferred his vote to Bortianor so the NPP is now shopping for a
potential candidate,” he stated on Citi TV’s Point of View.
He further indicated that even though his predecessor, ET Mensah is on
retirement, he also had an interest in ensuring that he lost the
primary.
Sam Nartey George defeated his contender Michael Kwetey Tetteh by seven
votes to retain the ticket to represent his constituency in the 2020
parliamentary election.
Certified results declared by Charles Botchey Jnr, the Electoral
Commission official gave Samuel Nartey George 407 votes as against 400
votes obtained by Mr Micheal Kwetey Tetteh. Two ballots paper were
rejected.
A total of 809 delegates from 89 out of the 93 branches took part in the NDC primary.
Security
Prampram Constituency bears the tag of being a political hottest spot
and to pre-empt any electoral violence, the District Security Committee
headed by the DCE, Jonathan Doku deployed close to 100 police personnel
drawn from the Police Headquarters, Tema Police Command and the Prampram
Police Division to oversee the security arrangements on the ground.
As part of its strategy to ensure the safety and security of the
primary, the District Security Committee also beefed up security with
Military deployment from 5BN Burma Camp and 1BN Michel Camp who were
deployed at the outskirts of the town.
The Prampram Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP
Mr Goadact Dodzi Hlordzi described the heavy police presence as normal
looking at the threat levels ahead of the election and stressed that it
was not aimed at intimidating voters.
Voting was however generally calm and devoid of any incident. Two
civilians who arrived at the polling center attired in military gear
were quickly whisked away by the police personnel.
