Daddy Lumba once told me he had been poisoned – Kofi Nti

Ghanaian highlife musician Kofi Nti has revealed that the late Daddy Lumba once confided in him about an incident in which he believed he had been poisoned.

Speaking in an interview, Okay FM on November 18, 2025, Kofi Nti recalled how the issue resurfaced during a conversation with Samini while they were both in the UK for a performance.

He explained that Samini had made a comment advising men to be cautious around women, referencing rumours that had circulated in the past about Daddy Lumba’s wife.

“I was in the same apartment with Samini in the UK when we went for a show. Samini made a comment when we were having a discussion, saying we men should be cautious about women. I asked him why he said that and he said, it’s alleged that Daddy Lumba’s wife Serwaa poisoned Daddy Lumba,” he said.

Kofi Nti said he corrected Samini immediately, insisting that the rumour was false, and went on to explain the actual story, as told to him by Daddy Lumba himself.

“I had to correct him that it wasn’t true so he asked me to explain it better to him since I was close to Daddy Lumba,” he stated.

According to Kofi Nti, Daddy Lumba narrated that the poisoning incident happened many years ago during a party he attended with friends.

“One day, I was with him in of his houses, having a conversation. Daddy Lumba told me he wanted to clarify some things with me. He said as he sang in one of his songs that he was once poisoned, people thought he was referring to his wife Serwaa but that’s not the case.

“It was some of his friends who poisoned him. According to him, they went to a party, he left his drink unattended at the party and upon his return, his drink had been tampered with,” he noted.

Kofi Nti further stated that Daddy Lumba advised him never to leave his drink exposed in public settings.

The musician claimed that Lumba called his wife, Odo Broni, during their conversation to affirm that the issue had nothing to do with his former wife, Akosua Serwaa.

“He advised me never to make that mistake of leaving my drink unattended to. He then called his wife Odo Broni to witness what he was telling me. He said when he got home from the party, he started vomiting blood,” he narrated.

Kofi Nti added, “He would have died if not that he’s a strong man. Odo Broni was aware that it was his friends he went to the party with who poisoned him so he called her to come confirm to me. The poison has got nothing to do with his wife Akosua Serwaa.”
