Concerned Citizens petition U.S. Embassy to facilitate extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta

A group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Ghana has petitioned the United States Embassy in Accra to assist Ghanaian authorities in facilitating the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who they claim is currently outside the country despite facing criminal charges.

In a petition dated December 2, 2025, the group called on the Embassy to support Ghana’s justice system, insisting that Mr. Ofori-Atta “has now been formally charged with multiple financial and economic crimes.”

According to the petitioners, the absence of the former minister is “delaying the criminal process and undermining our country’s fight against corruption and economic wrongdoing.”

The group stressed that their request is not a presumption of guilt but a demand for accountability.

“We make no claim about guilt or innocence. We only insist that Mr. Ofori-Atta returns to Ghana to face the charges in court, just like any other citizen,” the petition stated.

They further urged the Embassy to take three key actions.

  1. “Assist in verifying Mr. Ofori-Atta’s presence or status in the United States;”
  2. “Facilitate cooperation between U.S. and Ghanaian authorities;”
  3. “Support the expedited processing of any formal extradition request.”

Highlighting the longstanding partnership between the two countries, the petition noted “Ghana and the United States share a strong partnership rooted in democracy, transparency, and accountability.”

The group added that ensuring Mr. Ofori-Atta faces the courts would reinforce confidence in Ghana’s justice system.

“Justice must not depend on geography. Let the law work.”

The petition, which has been circulated online via a shared link, is signed by individuals identifying themselves as Concerned Citizens of Ghana.
