The police at Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region last Wednesday rescued a day-old baby girl abandoned in a gutter in the town. Wrapped in black polythene bag, the baby was found in the gutter near the Abonturudu stream, a popular area near the Tamale lorry station in the town. The incident threw the town into a state of shock and disbelief. Treatment The baby, who was rescued at about 5.30 p.m., was sent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Kintampo Municipal Hospital for medical attention. An eyewitness told the Daily Graphic that the cry of the baby attracted the attention of passers-by and some residents who subsequently reported the incident to local radio stations. Announcements by the radio stations caught the attention of the Kintampo Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ACP) Mr Joseph Gyau Antwi who went to the scene with some of his men and rescued the baby. Confirmation The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong confirmed the incident saying the police had launched full-scale investigations into the matter to locate the mother of the baby. He called on residents in the area to assist the police with information that would help find the mother or father of the baby. According to Chief Inspector Oppong, the baby was in good and stable condition. |
