I’ll pay each assembly member GH¢1,000 as monthly salary if elected-Mahama

Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has promised to pay all assembly members GH¢1,000 as monthly salary when he comes into power.

According to the ex-President, Akufo-Addo spent GH¢ 69 million in 2019 on travels in nine months and that money could be used to pay the assembly members.

“So, if the President alone can travel [for] GHS69 million cedis in nine months, why can’t we find the money to pay assembly members?” the NDC flagbearer asked party supporters.Mr Mahama made this promise during a meeting with the Ghana the Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) at his office in Accra.

However, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development after the promise said it was stated in the 2012 manifesto promise of the NDC which they never fulfilled when Mahama was President between 2013 and 2016.

“He [Mahama] knows it is impossible, the real situation is that the way the decentralisation scheme has been designed, they are like a board of the assembly and are not a full-time employee”, the Minister stated.
