Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey completes nationality switch to Ghana

Brighton and Hove Albion defender, Tariq Lamptey has completed his nationality switch to Ghana ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 21-year-old arrived in the West African country last week and was spotted at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday when the Black Stars defeated Madagascar 3-0 in their opener of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers.

Lamptey asked England U-21 coach Lee Carsley to be left out of the squad for the European U-21 Championship qualifying games because he is weighing up his international future.

According to Sports World Ghana, the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have had fruitful discussions with the right-back and his family and would be named in coach Otto Addo’s next squad in September for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers double-header tie against Angola.

Lamptey, who is also in Ghana for his charity works donated jerseys and other football apparel to kids in Nuaso near Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region of Ghana through the Tariq Lamptey Foundation in 2020 and will be doing the same this year.

The former Chelsea defender made 31 appearances for Brighton in the just ended Premier League campaign.
