Apply full rigours of new Act against Aisha Huang if found guilty – Prez Akufo-Addo instructs AG

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged his commitment to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Godfred Dame, over the prosecution of Chinese businesswoman En Huang, popularly known as Aisha Huang, and her collaborators.

Addressing the 2022/23 Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in the Volta Region capital city, Ho, on Monday, September 12, President Akufo-Addo said the Chinese galamsey queen should be made to face the full rigours of the amended law, Act 995, if they are found guilty.

“May I, learned colleagues, assure you of my full support of the Attorney General in his determination to prosecute Aisha Huang and her collaborators who apparently insist on flouting our laws against galamsey and illegal mining,” he said.

“I expect if they are found guilty that the courts will apply the full rigour of the new amended act, Act 995, which has increased substantially the punishment for breaches of the law.”

The Minister of Justice last Tuesday requested the file for Aisha Huang’s recent offences, for which she is standing trial at an Accra Circuit Court.

She is expected to reappear on Wednesday, September 14.

Before this, Mr Dame requested her docket and vowed to revisit the 2018 docket, which was aborted after a nolle prosequi in court.

She was deported only to re-enter the country a few months ago.
