The Western Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has revoked the award presented to Nana Amponsah, Chief Executive Officer of Okobeng Mining Company Limited.

The Regional Health Directorate on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, presented a citation to Nana Amponsah, popularly known as Okobeng, for his contributions toward healthcare delivery in the region.

Dr. Yaw Ofori-Yeboah, the Western Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, in a press statement issued on Thursday, March 30, 2023, said, that the regional health directorate has received several complaints with copious evidence against Nana Amponsah and the operations of his company, Okobeng Mining Company Limited.

The complaints, according to Dr. Ofori-Yeboah, include environmental degradation which has significant implications for health.

He indicated that, they have cited petitions from the Chiefs and youth of the Gwira Traditional Council against the company for acts that run counter to the principles behind the award.

The Regional Health Directorate, considering the revelations received afterward, and the misrepresentation made, unreservedly revoke the award presented to Nana Amponsah popularly known as Okobeng and subsequently disassociate themselves from the operations of Okobeng Mining Company Limited.

The statement further indicated that the Regional Health Directorate routinely honours individuals for their support to the health sector as part of their Annual Performance Review process.

In the instance of the above, Nana Amponsah, the CEO of Okobeng Mining Company Limited, was submitted among others for consideration.

And it is as a result of this, he was awarded without conducting proper investigation on the recommendation received to award Nana Amponsah.
