The New Patriotic Party has rubbished criticism against President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of two individuals to the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).
Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) and other groups have demanded the immediate resignation of Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani as members of the Electoral Commission due to their ties with the governing NPP.
The National Coordinator of CODEO, Albert Arhin has stated that their resignation will save the EC’s dwindling trust in the public eye.
The National Communication Director of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, in an interview, indicated that critics should rather focus on competencies of the two rather than party affiliations.

“Affiliation is not the capacity to work. I think that’s more substantial, we can talk about capacity or lack thereof. That is a more substantial conversation we had, because if you go on a tangent of political activism or affiliation, we can do that all day.”
“I don’t think that is a conversation that we should invest in. We should rather look at how we strengthen our electoral system, so we foster confidence in them,” Mr. Ahiagbah stated.
He continued: “EC is constitutionally guaranteed is not equivalent to saying that you have to appoint somebody who has no political attachment, or you cannot find any political relationship to a particular political party. If that’s the case, then, all of us are not qualified to head the EC, because we vote for one party or the other.”
