Police invite Afenyo-Markin over alleged assault of officer during protest

The Ghana Police Service has formally written to the Speaker of Parliament, requesting the release of Majority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in investigations into an alleged assault on a police officer during a recent demonstration.

The request follows a review of widely circulated video footage purportedly showing the MP involved in a physical altercation with a uniformed officer.

The incident is said to have taken place during a protest organized by opposition parties and civil society groups over the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 5, 2025, the Police Service confirmed that preliminary analysis of several video recordings from the demonstration had established grounds for a formal investigation.

“The Ghana Police Service is committed to ensuring professionalism, accountability, and justice for all parties involved,” the statement said.

The Service also reaffirmed its dedication to a transparent and impartial inquiry, calling on the public to remain calm as the process unfolds.
