The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and
Technology, KNUST has indicated that the declaration of the University
as a security zone by the Ashanti Regional Security Council, will not
affect its academic calendar.
The Ashanti Regional Security Council in a statement released on
Tuesday declared KNUST as a security zone as REGSEC said it had gathered
intelligence that some alumni were planning to cause disturbances on
the university campus.
Speaking to Citi News, the University Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel
Norris Bekoe said new students are expected to report to school on
Friday, as scheduled.
“The development will not affect academic calendar. We have already
communicated with parents and students that the fresh students will
start reporting on the 6th of September.
“We are expecting those at Obuasi Campus to start reporting on the 13th
of September and then all continuing students will start reporting on
the 16th September. We assure all students that adequate preparations
have been made to receive all students.”
The Alumni Association of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and
Technology had expressed shock at the decision of the Ashanti Regional
Security Council to declare the campus a security zone.
The Interim President for the Unity Old Continentals Alumni, Albert
Amegavi, in an interview with Citi News said the council is being overly
reactive.
Mr. Albert Amegavi was also of the view that the situation on campus
does not warrant REGSEC’s declaration of the place as a security zone.
“The Alumi is surprised by the decision of the REGSEC, and as much they
are in control of the region, we don’t know what prompted them to
release such a statement. They said it is based on intelligence on the
ground, but we hope that their intelligence is the right course.”
“We are waiting for the recommendations of the committee, admission is
going on and they are admitting ladies into the halls…. As much as they
are calling for this security zone thing, we are also shocked and
waiting for Otumfuo to declare whatever is in the report and we don’t
know where they picked their intelligence from. I don’t think there is
any cause for alarm to declare KNUST a security zone.”
