Ban all Trotro operations in Ghana – GPRTU Chairman

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Somaila Boakye has said, the government should ban all Trotro operations in the country.

This move according to him will minimize the numerous road accidents in the country.

Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Tuesday, chaired by BB, the GPRTU Chairman revealed that, many accidents on our roads are caused by trotro drivers.

“Trotro drivers create many accidents on our roads, ban them.” Somaila Boakye disclosed on the show.

He expatiated further that, the Trotro drivers in their business always rush for passengers and this lead to over speeding, needless overtaking thereby resulting in a crush.

In Christmas alone, thus between December 24-26, 2021, data from the Police MTTD shows that 28 lives were lost with 148 injuries recorded as 133 accidents occurred.

In a similar situation, between December 19 and 25, a total of 81 deaths with 378 injuries were recorded from 373 accidents. The MTTD attributed the cause of road crushes on excessive speeding on the part of drivers.

In relation to this crushes, Somaila believes that if Trotro operations are barred, operatives will find all possible means to load from lorry terminals thereby plummeting roads crushes in the country.
