Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has thrown his support behind calls for the expansion of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) electoral college, emphasizing the need for broader participation in the party’s decision-making processes.
Speaking at the Freshers’ Orientation and General Meeting of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) at the College of Health and Well-Being in Kintampo, Bono East Region, on February 22, 2025, Agyapong commended the student wing for its unwavering commitment to the party.
He encouraged members to intensify their efforts in mobilizing support as the NPP strategizes for the 2028 elections.
The former lawmaker, who has been vocal about the need for internal reforms, advocated for an increase in TESCON’s voting rights within the party’s national elections.
He proposed that instead of the current two votes per institution, all TESCON executives from accredited institutions should be granted voting rights. According to him, this would ensure greater youth participation and strengthen the party’s grassroots base.
Agyapong further reiterated his support for expanding the party’s electoral college, arguing that a more inclusive structure would boost engagement, enhance democracy, and minimize voter apathy within the NPP.
Beyond party matters, he also criticized the government over recent power outages, commonly known as “Dumsor.”
Sharing his personal experience, he revealed that his hotel had suffered over eight power cuts in a single day, a situation he lamented as unacceptable.
He insisted that such occurrences were not prevalent under previous NPP administrations and urged authorities to address the issue urgently.
His remarks have since sparked discussions within the party, particularly among younger members and grassroots supporters, who view the expansion of the electoral college as a crucial step toward a more representative and dynamic NPP.
