Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Overlord of the Asante Kingdom, has emphasised the need for stable electricity in Ghana to ensure the success of the government’s planned 24-hour economy.
The Asantehene has stressed that reliable power is crucial for the initiative to benefit the citizenry.
Speaking at a meeting with Dream Power Africa, a solar energy company, on May 21, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace, Otumfuo reiterated that reliable electricity is essential for national development.
He reemphasised the need to get reliable power in both rural and urban areas for industries willing to participate in the government’s 24-hour economy to thrive.
“Currently, the government has been talking about a 24-hour economy. If that is going to be successful, then energy must also be available in rural areas, and industries will need it to function efficiently.
“So, from a wider perspective, it will all help in the development of this country,” the Asantehene stated.
President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made the 24-hour economy a key policy promise in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
The initiative, according to the government, seeks to stimulate continuous economic activity across sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and ICT by encouraging businesses and public institutions to operate in shifts around the clock.
