Five Chinese nationals arrested in illegal mining raid at Akyem Oda

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has conducted a major operation against illegal mining activities in Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality, leading to the arrest of five Chinese nationals.

The raid, carried out on Monday, December 29, targeted unlawful mining along the Birim River, a key water body affected by galamsey activities. During the operation, security personnel seized and immobilised two excavators found at the site.

Authorities also confiscated a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Land Cruiser believed to have been used by the suspects to support their illegal operations. In addition, makeshift structures, water pumps and other mining equipment at the site were dismantled and destroyed to prevent further illicit activity.

NAIMOS reiterated its commitment to intensifying crackdowns on illegal mining, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas and along major rivers. The Secretariat said operations would continue throughout the festive season as part of efforts to curb environmental degradation and protect affected communities.

The suspects are expected to be processed for further investigations and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
