In his remarks to the House of Commons, he mentioned that the Ministry had agreed to award the team qualification bonuses rather than winning bonuses. The team led by Otto Addo managed to defeat South Korea but fell to Portugal and Uruguay, finishing last in the group.
The Sports Ministry had predicted that the Black Stars’ group stage campaign would cost $8 million prior to the competition.
He has since revealed that $5,171,840 was actually spent on the squad in Qatar, saving close to $3 million compared to the initial budget estimate.
“At the group stage, our projected spending was $8.1 million. According to Mustapha Ussif, published by Citisportsonline, “Out of this estimated budget Mr. Speaker, our entire spending for the group stage participation amounted to $5,171, 840. These costs went toward appearance fees, per diem, travel arrangements, medical care, logistics for the equipment, and hospitality.
“Mr. Speaker, the ministry’s cautious use of resources and the ministry’s choice to negotiate on qualification bonus for the next round instead of awarding winning incentives per round are the reasons for the excess of $3 million following our exit from the group stage,” he continued.
This indicates that despite the fact that our black heroes defeated South Korea in our second group match, no victory bonus was paid for that contest. In the meantime, Ghana received $11 million for taking part in the World Cup: $9 million in participation fees and $2 million for tournament preparation.
