My record shows I’m ready to lead in 2028 – Bawumia woos NPP delegates

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has appealed to delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to support his bid to lead the party into the 2028 general election, pointing to what he called his “unwavering loyalty and long-standing service” to the party.

Speaking at a meeting with party members in Sene East in the Bono East Region on Wednesday (15 OctoberƆ Bawumia reflected on his 16-year journey within the party, saying he had consistently served through both victories and defeats.

“I have faithfully served the New Patriotic Party for the past 16 years,” Bawumia said. “When Nana Akufo-Addo invited me to be his running mate in 2008, many advised me not to accept, fearing the NPP would lose. But I chose loyalty over convenience.”

Bawumia, who served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025, recounted his decision to leave the African Development Bank in 2012 to assist the NPP’s election campaign and later act as the star witness in the party’s election petition following the 2012 polls.

He highlighted several initiatives from his time in government, including the Ghana Card, Mobile Money Interoperability, and the Medical Drone Delivery Service, as evidence of his commitment to national development despite the limitations of the vice presidency.

“Though the role comes with limited constitutional powers, I worked hard to make a meaningful impact,” he said.

Bawumia urged delegates to reward his dedication with their mandate, pledging to strengthen the NPP’s unity and modernize its policies ahead of the next national vote.

“For these reasons — and because of my unwavering dedication to our party and country — I humbly ask for your support to lead the NPP into the future,” he said.

The NPP is expected to hold its next leadership contest in 2027 to select a flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election.
