Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has officially declared his intention to contest the presidential primary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) scheduled for January 31, 2026. According to him, he will officially declare his intention to contest the primary on July 29, 2025.
“It is for God and country. It is now official, and God willing, I will be contesting the presidential primary. I will be officially announcing my decision to contest on July 29, 2025.
Mr Agyapong was one of the key personalities who proposed to the party to prioritise its presidential primaries ahead of all other internal elections.
In a memorandum dated 17 April 2025, addressed to the NPP’s Constitution Amendment Committee chaired by Frank Davies, Mr Agyepong proposed a number of constitutional reforms aimed at promoting internal cohesion and fairness.
He had proposed to the party to scrap Article 13(9) of the party’s constitution, which mandates the use of a special electoral college to reduce the number of presidential aspirants to five.
In his view the existing process was undemocratic and vulnerable to manipulation, stating, “The current structure of this special college—comprising fewer than one thousand (1000) members—is susceptible to manipulation and undermines democratic fairness.”
The party at its conference over the weekend approved and scrapped the special Electoral College.
